Oleksandr Skochyk, 35 — who authorities said went by the name Musclebear — and Yeveniy Suray, 29, both of Kiev, will be sentenced June 21 and likely face prison terms of three to five years.

They sold some 40,000 doses of anabolic steroids and synthetic testosterone to Americans, through dealers in Pittsburgh, Iowa, Texas and Washington state, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Leo Dillon, who is prosecuting the cases. The drugs were made in Ukraine, China and Thailand.

The bust of the Pittsburgh dealer, Paul G. Matthews, led agents to their sources in the Ukraine. A Food and Drug Administration undercover agent arranged a meeting with them in Cyprus in 2010, at which time they detailed their business dealings and were arrested.

"These defendants were essentially at the top of this conspiracy," said Mr. Dillon.

Their defense attorneys, Chris Rand Eyster and William C. Kaczynski, confirmed that the two were involved in steroid sales, but disputed that they played leading roles in any conspiracy. U.S. District Judge Donetta W.  Ambrose will determine whether they played leadership roles, which will have a big impact on their sentences.

The study notes that use of banned substances by professional athletes to build muscle and gain a competitive advantage is a growing problem in sports such as track and field, baseball, football and cycling. Although effective methods exist for detecting the presence of illegal steroids in urine, current methods are time-consuming and involve cumbersome preparation steps.

Zheng Ouyang, R. Graham Cooks, and colleagues developed a new steroid-testing method that combines two state-of-the-art testing techniques called desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) and tandem mass spectrometry . In laboratory studies, the researchers used it to analyze fresh urine samples for the presence of tiny amounts of seven different anabolic steroids. The new method accurately identified the steroids in only a few seconds using only a single drop of urine, they say.

The Ryan Braun case has many people thinking about what athletes can, and cannot do to improve performance, and what is acceptable in the court of public opinion.

Olympian Jill Rookard, one of the most tested athletes in the world and from the skaters to the coaches, they want to do it clean.

Then enter Dr. Norman Fost.  A University of Wisconsin professor, who says steroids are not evil.
"It's cheating, obviously if there's a rule against it, you use it, then it's cheating.  You're breaking the rule.  But first the question is, why is the rule there in the first place," said Dr. Fost

In fact, Dr. Fost claims very few studies have been done to say that steroids are bad and not one single test definitely links steroids to all the problems that people claim it does to the body.

"The so-called risks of steroids are wildly exaggerated, and often just made up," said Dr. Fost.

Yet Dr. Fost claims there are myths about steroid use and abuse, with former NFL star Lyle Alzado as the poster boy.

"Nowhere in any of the luminous press that still floats around, about Lyle Alzado.  Nowhere is there a single sentence based on a single scientific fact or a single physician who thinks that there's any evidence at all that his brain tumor had anything to do with steroids," said Dr. Fost.

And while he's against steroids for boosting athletic performance, a Milwaukee area expert on bioethics agrees with Dr. Fost's argument.  "Steroids are prescribed all the time, and used safely for medical reasons.   And if we did it that way, it could be safe.  I don't dispute that," said Ryan Spellecy.  "In fact, as you look at the different arguments, most of them don't hold up."

This issue raised because of Ryan Braun's positive test that could be for an alleged banned substance, and how public perception frowns upon any item that can boost performance.

Dr. Fost  says he has been called the loneliest man in America, because of his stance, but that is changing. "I don't see any reason for treating them differently, than the literally hundreds of other drugs that athletes take to enhance their performance."

The doctor also says sports goes through improvements his equipment, so why not allow steroids, for increased performance?
  
Dr. Fost says he definitely would not recommend steroids for kids and younger, high school age athletes.

But he claims doctors could properly administer steroids to older athletes, rather than have an underground society that is unregulated.

Carvalho, who now plays back in his homeland for Palmeiras, told Brazilian radio station ESPN Estadao that he was given the drugs because CSKA's medical staff considered him "weak".

"In Russian football there isn't any [anti-]doping," he said. "There were needles put into my vein, and on the sixth or seventh injection I stopped taking them because I discovered that it was going straight into my heart.

"I told them I didn't want to take it any more."

The 28-year-old Brazilian, who was Man of the Match in CSKA's UEFA Cup Final win over Sporting Lisbon in 2005, was initially a hit in Russia, and was capped three times by Brazil in 2006.

But a decline in his performances, amid questions over his physical fitness, have provoked criticism – and Carvalho now blames the doping regime he alleges he was subject to in Moscow.

"I left Brazil thin, very thin," Carvalho said. "Then I went to Russia for six years, and they gave me steroid injections, and after six months I'd put on eight kilos."

Carvalho's admission comes hot on the heels of another drug controversy surrounding a major Eastern European club, after Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper Oleksandr Rybka was banned by UEFA for two years after testing positive for a banned diuretic.

It is also not the first time CSKA have been involved in a doping issue . Defenders Sergey Ignashevich and Alexey Berezutsky were suspended, though eventually cleared of any offence, after failing to declare they were taking a common flu remedy before a test following a Champions League game in 2009.

Police have arrested charged Leslie Parker, Jr. and charged him with possession and distribution of the illegal steroids.

"This is a major break in the pipeline of steroids coming to middle Tennessee," said Kyle Evans with the Murfreesboro Police Department.

More than 500-thousand dollars' worth of pills and injectables were found in a downtown Murfreesboro storage unit.

Evans said the steroids are shipped undetected from Shanghai, China to New York City.  From there they go by express mail to Murfreesboro.  In many case, police said the steroids end up at gyms and health clubs.

NewsChannel 5 spoke to a confidential informant who confirms despite the illegality and health risks the demand remains huge.

"It's in every gym in middle Tennessee, no question," he said. "You can see a guy bench pressing 275 one week and five weeks later he's doing 400 pounds."

Detectives said people pay big money for those results.  A vial of testosterone like this sells for fifteen-dollars in China and can go for more than $100 here.

Parker is free on bond.  NewsChannel 5 reached him by phone and asked if he is a steroid dealer.

"No, I completely deny it," said Parker. "There's a lot more to this story than meets the eye."

Parker and his attorney said they aren't ready to discuss any more at this time.

Experts said that the use of illegal steroids can be a significant health risk.  The substances can cause liver damage, high blood pressure, heart disease and even cancers.
